[hierarchy] database management system
proposed changes:
label: data base management system
definitionEN: Software which grants users the ability to interact with one or more databases using functions that allow access, entry, storage, retrieval, and (re)organization of data en masse.
subclassOf: software
label: digital system
definition: A system which consists of components that are digital.
relatedSynonym: software system
comment: A digital system could be a digital repository which consists of digital components such as a database management system and a database.
comment: The terms software system and digital system are very close but not the same, specifically because most software consists of multiple components and could be seen as a software system system. We not however that first, a digital system might however also include digital components that are not software (such as data); second the term software system is generally used for the congregation of a software (which is a specification) such as a specific instance of a software running somewhere; and third the term system (as in software system versus software) is generally used for entities with increasing complexity - the threshold for which is arbitrary. For these reasons we keep the terms software and digital system separate in the ontology with software system being a related synonym of digital system
original description
should be a subclass of software.
During the dev sprint in mid February we found a lot of classes being harboured in the hierarchy under "system" which is not very useful in terms of categorising things. Maybe this class (or classes under system) could be populated by inference.
With respect to data base management system the definition A digital system which includes computer software granting users the ability to interact with one or more databases using functions that allow access, entry, storage, retrieval, and (re)organization of data en masse.
seems to point to this being software anyways which is why we are thinking about moving it in the hierarchy under software
.
A sutiable defintion could be:
software which (1) consist of multiple parts and (2) grants users the ability to interact with one or more databases to access, store, retrieve and (re)organize data en masse
.
The part under (1) might be debatable but would point towards the label containing the term "system"
